POWER RANGERS TAKE FLIGHT

Episode 39: "All or Nothing, part 1"

This episode was completed on March 9, 2008, and released on November 29, 2008.  Its title reflects the two possible outcomes of this finale: either the Rangers prove victorious, or the Earth will be conquered.  (I was actually just as open to the latter option, but the finale's events tended toward a positive outcome.)

Writer:  Joe Rovang

[ Sentai footage is primarily from Jetman #23, 44, and 45, but all sources are indicated. ]

Jetman #23 is summarized in the commentary for episode 29.

In Jetman #44, Black has broken up with White due to their class differences.  Soon, people begin vanishing; the culprit is Tranza's new super-robot, Veronica (Gigazord), which is powered by the life forces of its civilian captives.  The Megazord and Kestrelzord both prove useless, until Radiguet attacks Tranza in the villains' cockpit, buying the Megazord time to impale Veronica through the head with the Phoenix Blade.  After a flurry of repairs, Veronica returns, and the Battlezord struggles against it until the Mega Kestrelzord arrives.  The Rangers are shaken when they view an image of Veronica's captives, and a connecting tube pierces the Mega Kestrelzord; Red and Black escape, but Tranza succeeds in capturing White, Yellow, and Blue.

In Jetman #45, as Red, Black, and Chokan work to repair their Zords, Tranza connects the captive Rangers to Veronica's power cells.  Radiguet, meanwhile, sabotages Veronica's controls; when Veronica faces the Mega Kestrelzord once more (and again with the connecting tube), the robot suddenly powers down, giving Red a chance to sneak aboard.  Tranza beats Radiguet and attaches him to Veronica's power cells as well, but Radiguet actually drains power from the robot and frees the Rangers (wishing to kill them himself some other day).  They return to the Mega Kestrelzord and use a new attack, propelling the Battlezord with the Gemini Beam, to destroy Veronica; Tranza, Maria, and Gray barely escape with their lives.  Radiguet, meanwhile, is still alive as well.

I chose to adapt the Veronica (Gigazord) battles as my finale (or the first part of it) because a war Zord seemed like a potent penultimate threat; it also happened to coincide with episodes 39 and 40 of the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, in which the war Zord Cyclopsis was originally planned as the Rangers' final battle (before the season was extended due to its popularity).  I threw in Infernis for variety and extra suspense, and because it was a fun way to incorporate some footage I'd cut out of episode 29; also, all of the other demons had been destroyed with finality in their second battles, so a second Infernis battle seemed all but mandatory.  Ultimately, I ended up extremely pleased with the way I was able to splice together two completely unrelated sentai battles in such a believable way.

[ Fade in to INT. HOUSE, LUKE'S ROOM - The lights are off in Luke's bedroom.  LISA enters and sits on the bed sullenly.  She then turns to the night-stand and picks up a framed picture resting there.  The picture is Chris's Sky Blaster sketch (see episode 32). ]

This episode takes place on Monday, September 28, 1992, the day after Luke was left in Garavan's dimension (episode 38).

Lisa continues to pine for Luke after he was left in another dimension in episode 38.  She's visiting with Pete and Casey at the moment; Maggie is presumably doing something school-related, and Chris is working his third-to-last day at the bicycle shop (see episode 38).  Pete and Casey's shifts start later in the day.

Chris gave this sketch to Luke as a tongue-in-cheek birthday present in episode 32.

[ LISA smiles wistfully. ]

[ EXT. MILITARY BASE - Establishment shot. ]

[ INT. HANGAR - SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST is looking up at a Zord standing above to his right (off-screen) when he is joined by GENERAL TAGGART. ]

GENERAL TAGGART:
How much longer?

SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST:
Another day or two before we can inspect all the servos.  We haven't turned up anything yet, though.

As revealed later, Taggart is reluctant to put the Battlezord to use without inspecting it thoroughly, as it's been in Magda's possession for three weeks (episodes 34-38).

[ GENERAL TAGGART nods, but he doesn't seem satisfied. ]

GENERAL TAGGART:
See that it's finished by tomorrow.

[ He exits.  TURNQUIST glances in his direction and then continues looking up. ]

A rare sign of conflict between Taggart and Turnquist.

[ Sentai (Jetman #34) - The KESTREL and BATTLEZORD tower above. ]

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - DILLIK and DR. BERING are busy working on separate wall controls. ]

Dillik chose to remain aboard the space station in episode 38.  They were last seen scanning various frequencies for word from Luke, but they're now preparing for a scouting mission into Mainframe's lair.

[ DILLIK curiously turns to DR. BERING. ]

DILLIK:
So, what are you going to do about being one Ranger short?

Luke remained in Garavan's dimension in episode 38, but he beamed his Morpher to the others.

[ DR. BERING doesn't stop working. ]

DR. BERING (discontentedly):
Well, I know what General Taggart wants to do.

DILLIK:
But you don't like his idea?

DR. BERING:
Not especially.  We've been down that road before.

Taggart apparently wants to replace Luke with one of his airmen, though the Rangers objected quite strongly to his nominee, Lance, in episode 31.

[ She finishes. ]

DR. BERING (cont'd):
All right.  Are you ready?

DILLIK:
Yep.  The flight path is all set, and we're recording on all available wavelengths.

DR. BERING:
All right.  Let's do it.

[ DR. BERING enters a final command. ]

[ INT. DARK LAIR - In the lair, the red-striped HOVERBIRD appears with greenish-silver vertical streaks.  It promptly begins scouring the area. ]

[ Sentai (Jetman #44) - Somewhere in the darkness, a pair of yellow eyes lights up. ]

eyes eyes

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - DILLIK approaches DR. BERING's monitor, in which we see the Hoverbird's perspective as it flies through the lair, taking brief glimpses of various crates and pieces of machinery. ]

DILLIK:
Okay, we should be coming up on the Gigazord.

[ INT. DARK LAIR - The HOVERBIRD advances and tilts its camera eye upward. ]

[ Sentai (Jetman #43) - As we pan up the silhouette of a monstrous entity in the darkness, blue electrical bolts crackle up its body.  Its eyes and a point on its chest are glowing yellow. ]

Gigazord crackles Gigazord crackles Gigazord crackles Gigazord crackles

I originally planned to use this footage as a teaser in the episode prior to the finale (episode 38), but between the plots for episodes 38 and 39, I felt the shot was of more use here.

The glowing point in its chest is the tip of the Gigazord's penetrating tube which is used later, in battle.

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - DR. BERING is transfixed. ]

DR. BERING:
It's huge...

I originally had Dillik scoff that the Gigazord wasn't even 100 meters tall (per a sentai fact sheet giving Veronica's height as 92 meters), but this seemed to unduly downplay the threat posed by the Gigazord.

[ INT. DARK LAIR - As the HOVERBIRD continues to study the giant above (off-screen), an electric hum is heard nearby.  The HOVERBIRD promptly zips backward and clanks against a metallic surface (off-screen).  We whip-pan to see MAINFRAME holding a magnetic device of some sort, to which the HOVERBIRD is now attached.  MAINFRAME grasps the HOVERBIRD in his hand and discards the device. ]

My original inclination was for Mainframe merely to pluck the Hoverbird out of the air while it was distracted, but I felt this would ignore the Hoverbird's tendency to avoid strangers (see episode 1), so I invoked a magnet.

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - DR. BERING and DILLIK watch apprehensively.

[ In the monitor, the Hoverbird's view turns over to look up at MAINFRAME's face as he keeps his fingers wrapped around it. ]

[ INT. DARK LAIR - Small filaments creep out from MAINFRAME's palm and penetrate the HOVERBIRD's surface. ]

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - The transmission garbles slightly, and MAINFRAME then peers down into the camera. ]

MAINFRAME (in sing-song):
Now I know your frequencies...

From episodes 1 through 30, the villains were able to monitor the Hoverbirds' signals, but Dr. Bering changed their frequency in episode 31.  Now Mainframe is patched back in, though.

[ The video then cuts to static. ]

[ DR. BERING and DILLIK look at each other. ]

[ EXT. SPACE STATION - Trask's ship, hereby referred to as DILLIK'S SHIP, remains attached to the space station. ]

CHRIS (voice-over):
So you're saying you think he's finished it.

DILLIK (voice-over):
It's not that I think he's finished it.  He's finished it!

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - In casual clothes, CHRIS, CASEY, PETE, and LISA meet with DR. BERING and DILLIK. ]

Lisa isn't in her usual uniform because she was visiting the house.  Chris has apparently left work to come here.

DILLIK (cont'd):
That was the power-up sequence we saw.

This is my explanation for the crackling footage seen earlier.

CASEY:
So how much longer until --

[ She is interrupted by an alert tone.  OFFICER1 appears in the monitor. ]

OFFICER1 (from monitor):
Dr. Bering, we're getting a reading downtown.

[ DR. BERING looks grimly at the four HEROES. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - From behind a veil of smoke, the GIGAZORD emerges.  It is a heavily armored giant gray robot with numerous curved projections. ]

Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut

In the sentai, a giant black rectangular monolith (similar to those in 2001: A Space Odyssey, but much larger) appeared downtown and caused people to vanish before it transformed into Veronica (the Gigazord), now powered by its civilian captives.

The ensuing Gigazord battle mixes footage from the three Gigazord battles in Jetman #44 and 45.

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - In the completed cockpit (compare with episode 32), MAINFRAME sits at the command seat.  The cockpit is equipped with manual controls, but MAINFRAME merely holds his hands against the console. ]

In the sentai, Veronica was simultaneously piloted by Tranza, Maria (Sasha), Gray (Strife), and sometimes Radiguet (Trask), when he wasn't busy doublecrossing Tranza or being punished for his insolence.

Dillik designed manual controls for the Gigazord, but Mainframe has little use for them.

MAINFRAME:
(laughs wickedly)  I'm coming for you, Rangers!

Mainframe's primary objective, as stated in episode 38, is to destroy the Rangers.  What he would do with planet Earth after their destruction isn't revealed.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD stalks through the city and out of frame.  (A tiny Japanese flag atop a building in the background may be replaced with a United States flag.) ]

Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut Gigazord's debut

Aww, cute little Japanese flag...

[ INT. HANGAR (Jetman #1) - As an alarm sounds, a set of heavy metal doors slide open, revealing the five SKY FLYERS at rest in a hangar.  A red alarm light is flashing. ]

hangar hangar hangar hangar

Man, I was waiting forever to use this shot!

[ INT. SPACE STATION COMMAND - In the monitor, the GIGAZORD turns and showers the city with dark bluish beams of energy from its mouth, causing a number of explosions (Jetman #44). ]

city blasted city blasted city blasted city blasted city blasted city blasted city blasted

[ DILLIK shamefully rubs the back of his head. ]

DILLIK:
I kinda wish I hadn't designed that beam now.

Originally, Dillik remarked that the beam wasn't designed for that purpose, but I decided I didn't want to completely absolve Dillik of his previous mission to wipe out humanity.

[ DR. BERING looks on apprehensively. ]

DR. BERING (inwardly):
Hurry, Rangers.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD turns as the MEGAZORD lands nearby.  The MEGAZORD assumes a ready position. ]

confrontation confrontation confrontation confrontation confrontation

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The four RANGERS man the Megazord, with BLACK RANGER in the front, center seat. ]

Chris also manned this seat in episode 38.

I'm using US cockpit footage here because all five Rangers were present in the sentai (and they were unmorphed in parts).

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD curls its clawed fingers readily and speaks, its voice a booming, monstrous version of Mainframe's voice. ]

titan speaks titan speaks

GIGAZORD:
Ahh, Megazord...

I don't know whose voice Veronica used in Jetman... Tranza's perhaps?

I tried quite hard to match the Gigazord's dialog to its mouth movements, including the relative length of each syllable.

[ The GIGAZORD stares down the MEGAZORD. ]

confrontation

GIGAZORD (cont'd):
So you'll be my first opponent!

[ The MEGAZORD takes a sideways step, and the GIGAZORD steps in the opposite direction. ]

confrontation confrontation

GIGAZORD (cont'd):
And I'll be your last!  (laughs wickedly, both step)

Wait, if he's the Megazord's last opponent and the Megazord is his first, whom does he think he'll be fighting next?  The Battlezord?  The Kestrelzord manned by the military?

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER clenches his fist before reaching to press a button in front of him. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
We'll see about that!  Rocket punch!  (presses button)

The Rangers must have learned about the rocket punch off-screen at some point, presumably after episode 34.

[ Sentai (Jetman #44) - BLACK RANGER's hand presses the button, activating a fist diagram. ]

rocket punch

In episode 7, this graphic represented the "Skyforce Punch," which was simply a (non-rocket) punch from the Megazord.  Clearly the Megazord has been upgraded since then.

The name "rocket punch," though a bit simplistic, was an homage to the anime Mazinger Z (dubbed in the West as Tranzor Z), which featured an aptly-named "rocket punch" of its own.

Now that all of the Megazord weapons and attacks have been revealed, this seems like a fine time to recap them all:

[ Sentai (Jetman #6) - Joysticks flip up. ]

No sense creating self-moving joysticks in a US cockpit if this footage is already available in the sentai.

[ BLACK RANGER grabs the joysticks. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD readies its right fist. ]

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER begins to squeeze the right trigger button. ]

[ Sentai (Jetman #6) - His thumb presses the trigger. ]

joystick button joystick button joystick button

In this particular sentai shot from Jetman #6, it was actually Red Ranger's hand squeezing the trigger button.  I'm using this shot instead of the Black Ranger squeeze native to Jetman #44 because I wanted Yellow Ranger in the background to match Chris's position in the center seat, beside Pete.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD's fist launches from its forearm like a missile.  (US effects may be used to enhance the rocket punch's appearance, such as straightening the trajectory and enhancing the rocket flames.) ]

Not the best special effects work I've seen in Jetman.

[ The rocket fist flies from the MEGAZORD toward the camera. ]

[ Our perspective flies toward the distant GIGAZORD as it stands ready. ]

[ The fist smashes into the GIGAZORD's torso with a spark explosion, causing the GIGAZORD to stagger back slightly.  The fist (US addition) flies away. ]

rocket punch rocket punch rocket punch

Hey, that's kinda nice, that the rocket punch's first use was fairly successful, as opposed to most other attacks performed against the Gigazord.

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME steadies himself at the controls. ]

MAINFRAME:
Hmm, I need a chance to get used to this Zord.

I believe this explained Tranza's initially poor performance in Veronica as well.

[ MAINFRAME removes his hands from the controls.  A small hidden compartment in his chest slides open, revealing a familiar red gem (see episode 35). ]

Oh hey, look at that - the last demon gem!  Mainframe took it from Trask in episode 35.

MAINFRAME:
This ought to buy me some time!

[ A fiery pulse emanates from the gem. ]

The fiery pulse mimics the effect used when Trask first unleashed Infernis on Spring Valley.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER presses his button again. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Raptor Axe!

The Raptor Axe's only other use was against Brimstone (episode 34).

[ Sentai (Jetman #44) - As he presses the button, the diagram of the RAPTOR AXE appears on-screen.  (The red square on the small device below the monitor may be changed to black via US tinting.) ]

This was actually Red Ranger's hand again.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD brandishes the RAPTOR AXE and advances. ]

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - Reacting, MAINFRAME closes his compartment panel, hiding the red gem, and returns his hands to the console. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD strikes the GIGAZORD three times with the RAPTOR AXE, causing a flash of sparks each time.  The GIGAZORD remains relatively inert. ]

[ The MEGAZORD then thrusts the RAPTOR AXE forward, knocking the GIGAZORD back with another burst of sparks. ]

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - YELLOW RANGER cockily brushes his hands together. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Man, and I was expecting this to be hard!

The sentai version of Yellow Ranger's cocky reaction was fine to use, except for the fact that five Rangers were present.

[ Distant thunderous footsteps can be heard.  The RANGERS look left. ]

LISA (Blue Ranger):
Huh?

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #23) - Now lacking its axe, the MEGAZORD, formerly looking down, quickly looks to its left and assumes a startled defensive stance. ]

shock shock shock shock

Too bad the axe is missing in this shot, because otherwise I think it's a great transition between what were originally unrelated sentai battles.

[ Approaching in the distance is INFERNIS (see episode 29). ]

Infernis Infernis Infernis Infernis

Surprise!

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS recoil in shock. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
What the --?!

CASEY (Pink Ranger):
It's Trask's red demon!

Infernis is the only demon whose name hasn't been revealed to the Rangers (but it will be in episode 40).

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Yeah, and the only one we haven't faced again.

The Rangers fought Gog in episodes 30 and 32, and Zin and Drek in episodes 30 and 35.  Infernis was only fought in episode 29.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD rises and assumes a ready stance. ]

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - As the RANGERS look between their opponents at center and right (both off-screen) BLACK RANGER shakes his head with dissatisfaction. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
This is gonna be tricky.  Let's keep the Gigazord off its feet before we tackle lobster-face over there.  Ball-and-chain!  (presses button)

[ Sentai (Jetman #20) - BLACK RANGER presses his button, revealing the flail diagram. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD readies the flail weapon and then throws it.  It flies through the air. ]

[ As the flail approaches the GIGAZORD, it performs a mighty karate chop.  The flail fall to the GIGAZORD's feet, cleanly cleaved in two.  We pan up to see the GIGAZORD standing ready. ]

Aww, poor flail.  You've been useful (on occasion) since episode 13 when you were stolen from Disastros.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS shift uncomfortably. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Uhh... uh oh.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #23) - INFERNIS extends his hand. ]

This spark shot was also used in episode 17 when a malfunction prevented the Rangers from summoning the Phoenix Blade.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS are shaken.  BLACK RANGER presses a button on his controls. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):

Your guess is as good as mine as to how the fist gets reattached after this point.

The Gigazord's sword is a slight (but not atrocious) inconsistency at times throughout all this battle-splicing I did.

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME gloats but then looks up to the left. ]

MAINFRAME:
Ready for more, Rangers?  (looks up)  Huh?

[ EXT. SKY (Jetman #44) - The KESTRELZORD flies overhead. ]

Kestrelzord Kestrelzord

In the sentai, the Kestrelzord was apparently unpiloted at this point; at all other times (to my recollection), it seemed the Kestrel required a pilot.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS react. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Hey, did anybody call the Kestrelzord?

LISA (Blue Ranger):
No, but we should have.

Once again making light of the sentai's tendency not to bring in supplemental Zords until the team had received a thorough pummeling.

[ INT. KESTREL COCKPIT (US footage) - RED RANGER, in feminine form (see episode 32), gives a casual salute.  (Her holsters hold their standard weapons, though they perhaps don't appear here.) ]

DR. BERING (Red Ranger):
Hi, Rangers.  Need some help?

Dr. Bering morphed briefly as the Red Ranger for a demonstration in episode 32, but at that time I didn't plan for this twist.  But once I'd put Luke out of commission for most of the finale, having Dr. Bering pilot the Kestrelzord as the Red Ranger came almost immediately to mind.  (She'll hand off the Morpher to Maggie in the next episode, just in time for Maggie to take the role for the more intense action sequences.)

In the sentai, the Rangers' mentor Chokan never morphed (and in fact only the five heroes could morph in the sentai, as they alone had been imbued with special Birdonic energies in the premiere).  She did, however, pilot the Kestrelzord against Moleworm in Jetman #43.

To my knowledge, Power Rangers has never (even temporarily) featured a Ranger team with more females than males.  I do so not only once but twice (see episode 40).

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS appear surprised. ]

LISA (Blue Ranger):

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
She's down!

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Yeah, well, we've got our own problems!  (presses button)  Phoenix Blade!

Well that's a bit callous, Chris.  But true, perhaps.

[ EXT. CITY (ELSEWHERE) (Jetman #23) - The MEGAZORD brandishes the PHOENIX BLADE and charges. ]

Phoenix Blade ready Phoenix Blade ready Phoenix Blade ready Phoenix Blade ready Phoenix Blade ready

I cut a shot of Infernis from the Megazord's advancing perspective, as it seemed inappropriate for the Rangers not to help Dr. Bering if Infernis was just standing still; with that shot cut, I left open the possibility that Infernis was advancing on them off-screen.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER pushes forward on his right joystick. ]

[ EXT. CITY (ELSEWHERE) (Jetman #23) - Advancing, the MEGAZORD swings the PHOENIX BLADE, but INFERNIS deftly catches the blade between two fingers. ]

Yeah, I'd say you're pretty powerful when you can catch a sword strike with just two fingers.

[ INFERNIS drags the MEGAZORD around by the PHOENIX BLADE.  The MEGAZORD struggles. ]

Phoenix Blade struggle Phoenix Blade struggle Phoenix Blade struggle Phoenix Blade struggle Phoenix Blade struggle

[ Finally, INFERNIS delivers a chop to the sword, breaking off the first third or more.  He retains the broken piece in his left hand. ]

Phoenix Blade broken Phoenix Blade broken Phoenix Blade broken

This is the third time the Phoenix Blade has been broken or otherwise ruined.  First, Smog Rat ruined the sword (episode 31), and Dr. Bering hadn't tempered the replacement blade sufficiently by the time it broke against Brimstone's body (episode 34).  The tempering issue will be the basis for Dr. Bering's comment below.

In the sentai, this was actually the first time the Phoenix Blade was ever broken, as it took place in Jetman #23.

[ The MEGAZORD staggers back, broken sword in hand. ]

Phoenix Blade broken Phoenix Blade broken Phoenix Blade broken Phoenix Blade broken

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS are alarmed. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
No way!

[ INT. KESTREL COCKPIT (US footage) - RED RANGER watches toward her left until something to her right draws her attention. ]

DR. BERING (Red Ranger):
How much stronger do I have to make that stupid sword?  (looks right)  Uh oh.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD lets loose a barbed tendril connected to its backside as a tail.  The tendril flies through the air and latches onto the downed KESTRELZORD's neck. ]

tendril tendril tendril tendril tendril

Why does a war Zord need a tail?  For just this purpose!

[ EXT. CITY (ELSEWHERE) (Jetman #23) - The sword fragment still in his hand, INFERNIS projects red electricity from his eyes.  It wraps around the MEGAZORD, and the robot drops the broken PHOENIX BLADE.  The MEGAZORD struggles but is lifted off the ground. ]

Megazord levitation Megazord levitation Megazord levitation

As soon as I noticed both the Gigazord and Infernis fights featured similar staging (with regard to the Zord-flinging), I couldn't resist layering them on top of each other, though it might have worked out this way anyway, given the necessary timing of the battles.

[ The MEGAZORD crashes to the ground (a US red electrical bolt may be added around the MEGAZORD; compare with sentai). ]

Megazord levitation Megazord levitation

I don't know why the sentai omitted the red bolt in this shot but included it the next time the Megazord landed.

CASEY (Pink Ranger):
Let's try the Mega Kestrelzord!

A fine idea!  Let's do that!

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Good idea.  (to monitor) You copy that, Dr. Bering?

[ In the monitor, RED RANGER nods from the Kestrel cockpit. ]

DR. BERING (Red Ranger, from monitor):

Originally when I was reviewing footage for this episode, it puzzled me that the Gigazord was apparently trying to prevent the Zords from touching each other, but I then realized this was a routine lead-in to the Mega Kestrelzord's assembly sequence.

[ Suddenly, both of their forearms are grabbed by the GIGAZORD's hands. ]

Effective counter, Mainframe, but if you're trying to prevent them from touching each other, you might want to hurl them in different directions.

[ INT. LAB - GENERAL TAGGART and SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST watch a monitor tended to by a TECHNICIAN. ]

[ SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST seems uncomfortable with the sight in the monitor (not shown). ]

SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST:
Uhh, General, pardon my impertinence, but don't you think we should send the Battlezord?

I made an effort to explain the Battlezord's failure to appear sooner.

GENERAL TAGGART:
Not until it passes inspection.  It spent nearly three weeks in enemy hands.  There's no telling what they did to it.

[ SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST appears to stifle further rebuttal on his part. ]

More disagreement from Turnquist, though he doesn't voice it further.

[ The TECHNICIAN catches sight of another monitor. ]

TECHNICIAN:
Uhh... General...?  I'm picking up an extremely large object approaching Earth.

It's the demon-eater, which Project Phoenix has actually tracked before (in episode 28).  Mabye it's new to this particular technician, though.

[ GENERAL TAGGART furrows his brow suspiciously. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The MEGAZORD drops to the ground.  The GIGAZORD stands in the foreground. ]

While suspended in the sentai, the Megazord took advantage of Veronica's brief pause (while Radiguet had turned on Tranza) to summon its Phoenix Blade and stab the war Zord through the head; at this point, the Megazord was dropped, and Veronica flew away on translucent wings, to return later.  My primary problem with this sequence was the "stabbing through the head" part, but I'd also broken the Phoenix Blade, courtesy of the Infernis battle.

[ INT. LAB - GENERAL TAGGART and SPECIAL AGENT TURNQUIST continue to watch the monitor, both appearing somewhat concerned.  GENERAL TAGGART leans forward and presses a button as he speaks into a microphone. ]

GENERAL TAGGART:
Dr. Bering, status report.

DR. BERING (from monitor):
Oh, just trying to get the Kestrel back online.  How's that Battlezord coming?

[ GENERAL TAGGART grunts privately.  Meanwhile, the TECHNICIAN turns to him, working another monitor. ]

TECHNICIAN:
General, the object has entered the magnetosphere.

The magnetosphere is the area around an astronomical object (here, the Earth) in which phenomena, including solar particles, are appreciably affected by its magnetic field.  This would have placed the demon-eater at a distance of perhaps 70,000 kilometers or so, far closer than the moon, but still far enough away that the creature wouldn't take up an enormous portion of the sky.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #23) - INFERNIS is struck from above with a blue electrical bolt.  He grows rigid, and the space around him seems to ripple slightly.  (The broken piece of the Phoenix Blade may be added with a US effect, falling from his left hand.) ]

Infernis frozen Infernis frozen Infernis frozen

In Jetman #23, Infernis' attack was temporarily suspended by a bolt from the Kestrelzord's beak cannon, which temporarily froze Infernis in a large block of ice.

[ The broken piece of the Phoenix Blade drops to the ground, its size dwarfing several cars in the background. ]

broken blade broken blade broken blade

In the sentai, it was actually the Sky Kestrel's initial blast (unseen) which caused Infernis to drop the blade fragment, and the freezing came afterward.

My decision to insert the shot of the blade fragment being dropped at this point was simply for continuity, as I noticed he'd been holding it prior to now.  I didn't yet realize this discarded fragment would play a pivotal role in the Rangers' victory next episode.

[ Space continues to warp around INFERNIS, ultimately encasing him in a large, misty crystal.  He appears frozen solid. ]

Infernis frozen Infernis frozen Infernis frozen Infernis frozen Infernis frozen

Who knows why the demon-eater fires an energy bolt that freezes demons in place before disintegrating them?  It was a requirement of the sentai footage.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD reacts. ]

what the --?! what the --?!

GIGAZORD:
Huh?  What is this?!

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS are perplexed.  They then look up. ]

[ EXT. SKY - In the sky looms the demon-eater (see episode 28) as seen from head-on, only its sun-lit surface visible through the daylight sky (like a half moon or crescent moon in daylight).  It appears only slightly smaller than the apparent size of the moon. ]

The demon-eater's proximity to the Earth is nearly as many times great (x5.5) as the moon's size is greater than the demon-eater's size (x6), making their apparent size from Earth nearly the same.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - YELLOW RANGER points up at the sky. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
It's the demon-eater!  He came back!

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #23) - INFERNIS' crystalline enclosure gleams with rays of white light, and he is then obliterated in a bright explosion.  As the light subsides, only sparkles remain. ]

Infernis obliterated Infernis obliterated Infernis obliterated Infernis obliterated Infernis obliterated Infernis obliterated

Infernis' destruction was actually just a visual trick performed by cutting the shot short; had the sentai shot continued, we'd have seen the thawed Infernis amidst the smoke.  I just lucked out that this shot could pass so easily as his destruction.

[ The MEGAZORD rises. ]

Megazord rises Megazord rises

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME looks down at his chest.  His compartment opens, revealing smoking, blackened fragments of the red gem.  He grunts disgustedly, and a small panel in the back of the compartment pushes the fragments out as he brushes them away with his hand.  The compartment is gone once the back panel meets the surface of his chest, and he returns his hands to the console in front of him. ]

This is remotely similar to episode 29, in which the hijacked Kestrelzord (also piloted by Mainframe!) grabbed the Megazord by the face and threw it.

[ INT. LAB - GENERAL TAGGART watches the monitor reluctantly.  He finally gives in. ]

GENERAL TAGGART:
Send the Battlezord.

The left-hand billboard surely isn't in frame enough for the audience to be able to make out the "Juice" brand billboard, but as long as I had to replace it with something, I wanted to make it something relevant to Take Flight.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS appear concerned. ]

LISA (Blue Ranger):
Oh no!  Battlezord!

[ DR. BERING's voice emanates from the controls. ]

DR. BERING (from controls):
It's buying us time to form the Mega Kestrelzord!

I don't believe this was the case in the sentai, but it seemed like as decent a justification as any for the Battlezord's pummeling.

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Well, let's get to it!

Now that Dr. Bering has arrived, the Rangers' current cockpit positions coincidentally match the positions from a portion of Jetman #51 (the sentai finale); there, Black took Red's center seat, and Chokan took Black's normal seat.  Two differences, however, are that the Rangers weren't morphed at that point, and Chokan didn't have any powers.

The Gemini Beam has been unstoppable on all previous instances, against even the strongest foes; that the Gigazord could so easily deflect it is quite worrisome.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The RANGERS appear shocked, but YELLOW RANGER is flippant. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Well, there's that shield Dillik told us about.

Originally, Pete's reaction was utter disbelief, but I figured surely Dillik would have warned them about some of the Gigazord's specific capabilities.  He may have even described some to Lisa in events shown in episode 37, but now that he's sharing the space station with them, he's had even more opportunity to fill them in.

CASEY (Pink Ranger):
You guys, if the Gemini Beam can't stop him, what will?

[ BLACK RANGER looks on grimly. ]

[ INT. CONNECTING TUBE (US footage) - In a long, dark tunnel only ten feet in diameter (its slight curvature matching the sentai), a stream of NOBOTS pours out from a round opening leading into an area of dark machinery.  They hurry down the tunnel carrying dark gray, baton-like weapons with points at the end (compare with Liveman #3).  The NOBOTS run with their arms stiffly extended out to the sides. ]

Hey look, it's the typical mob of foot soldiers you see in every Power Rangers finale!  We know what's coming now, right, kids?

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLUE RANGER clenches her fist. ]

LISA (Blue Ranger):
This is it, guys!  Just like Dillik warned us!

[ RED RANGER presses a button. ]

DR. BERING (Red Ranger):
Right!  Activating Echo Shield!

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - As we zoom in on the punctured MEGA KESTRELZORD, a sparkling shimmer (US effect) builds up across the robot's body (see episode 16) as a humming sound builds. ]

[ INT. CONNECTING TUBE (US footage) - The humming shimmer sweeps down the inside of the tunnel, jarring the NOBOTS in their tracks as it passes them.  Some spark and crackle with electricity. ]

And yet it doesn't come to pass: no foot soldier invasion, thanks to Dillik's advance warning.  Take that, audience expectations!

Incidentally, I had hopes of reusing the Echo Shield (a plot device previously specific to episode 16), and I found a use for it here.  I found it satisfying for the finale to reuse so many familiar elements from earlier in the series; not only does it make the finale more of an encapsulation of the series, but it retroactively gives more significance to what would have been one-shot details (example: the Echo Shield).

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME looks around anxiously. ]

MAINFRAME:
What's happening?!

In the sentai, the disruption was caused by Radiguet's power inversion, as he began to siphon energy from Veronica rather than provide it.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER addresses RED as she works her controls. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Give it more power!

[ The humming sound in the cockpit grows louder, and the cabin lights flicker briefly, drawing the RANGERS' attention. ]

Is this some off-brand backup generator, Dr. Bering?

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - Its sword ready, the GIGAZORD then suddenly tenses up and begins to crackle with blue electrical bolts.  It then slumps limply. ]

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - BLACK RANGER rises from his seat and heads toward the rear door.  YELLOW and PINK join him. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Lisa, stay and help Dr. Bering.  We're gonna go pay Mainframe a visit.

It seemed appropriate for Lisa to remain with Dr. Bering in the cockpit, as they were the most technically-oriented at this point.

[ INT. CONNECTING TUBE (US footage) - From inside the tunnel, we see into the damaged machinery beyond.  Three large pincer flaps remain open (compare with sentai tube's end).  The BLACK, YELLOW, and PINK RANGERS drop down onto the bottom flap and enter the tunnel.  Each has a BATTLIZER on his or her right hand. ]

[ Further down the tunnel, the stunned NOBOTS recover and notice the Rangers ahead (off-screen).  They ready their baton weapons and charge forward, arms once again extended out by their sides. ]

[ BLACK RANGER aims his BATTLIZER forward, as do YELLOW and PINK. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Battle Birds, launch!

They didn't call for Striker Mode first to open the Battle Birds' wings (see episode 38).  Oh well.

[ The three BATTLE BIRDS launch from the RANGERS' fists and open their wings as they fly ahead at high speed.  Just as they reach the camera, they begin to glow with respective purple, yellow, and pink light. ]

[ INT. CONNECTING TUBE (US footage) - Inside the tunnel, all of the NOBOTS lie in ruin, a few crackling and twitching. ]

As in episode 38, those Battle Birds are pretty powerful.

Was this the last of the Nobots?  No, I think there are probably more hidden in the Siberian lair (more on that in the commentary for episode 40).  Plus, there has to be at least one more to double for Mainframe at the end of this episode.

[ The three RANGERS approve.  Their BATTLE BIRDS return to their wrists. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
All right!  Now let's go say hi.

[ Their BATTLIZERS remaining on their hands, the three RANGERS hurry down the tunnel, stepping over piles of robot carnage. ]

GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME continues to hold his hands on the console.  Suddenly, the rear door blows off its frame with a foot indentation in the center.  MAINFRAME whirls around to find the BLACK, PINK, and YELLOW RANGERS in the entranceway with their BATTLE ENFORCERS aimed at him.  The BATTLE ENFORCERS are similar in design to the previous Sky Enforcers and Echo Enforcers, but it is the BATTLE BIRDS which are assembled with the SKY BLASTERS.  The BATTLIZERS' wrist braces remain on the RANGERS' wrists. ]

Curiously, I use the Battle Enforcers before actually showing them assembled (I show that in episode 40).  This could have something to do with the fact that I wrote almost all of episode 40 before writing nearly any of episode 39 (beyond a simple plot outline).

The Battle Enforcers (like the new Battlizers) are a US-original invention, but I retained the theme of a supplemental weapon sliding into the Sky Blaster to form an Enforcer-style rifle.  Unlike the Sky Enforcer and Echo Enforcer, however, the Battle Enforcer uses only a component of the supplemental weapon, as the Battlizer's brace remains on the Ranger's wrist while the Battle Bird is inserted.  Incidentally, I don't indicate how the Battle Enforcers' power level relates to other weapons, but I imagine they could be a bit stronger than the Echo Enforcers, and their combined five-man blast probably even rivals the Phoenix Cannon.

[ MAINFRAME freezes. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Why don't you take it easy, Mainframe?  Wouldn't want somebody to get hurt.

If the Rangers had destroyed Mainframe here, they'd have simply had to shoot his Jinnsect before it grew.  But in all the rush, they haven't yet noticed his Jinnsect (see next episode), and further, gunning him down without a chance to surrender seems too aggressive (and would have made this a quick finale).

[ MAINFRAME raises his hands timidly. ]

MAINFRAME:
Don't shoot.

[ BLACK RANGER gestures toward the controls. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Shut down the Gigazord's reactors.

[ MAINFRAME meekly turns. ]

MAINFRAME:
Anything you say.

[ MAINFRAME places a hand on the controls. ]

Not the best idea, having a technopath put his hands on the metal structure surrounding all of you.  Technically, though, I wonder if he might have been able to control the cockpit metal through his feet; this is never revealed about Mainframe.

[ Suddenly, makeshift metallic fixtures extend from the wall and grab the RANGERS by the wrists.  They are pulled back and pinned against the wall.  YELLOW RANGER drops his BATTLE ENFORCER, and it clatters on the metal floor.  The others' weapons are pinned to the side. ]

Though I didn't specify it in the script, I imagined that Chris and Casey's Battle Enforcers might even be pinned in a direction such that they'd shoot each other if they fired.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - The connecting tube retracts, leaving a gaping hole in the MEGA KESTRELZORD's midsection.  A few pieces of broken NOBOTS may be seen sprinkling out of the tip of the tube (US addition). ]

pull out pull out pull out

I liked the detail of the Nobot parts sprinkling out as it retracts, but I wouldn't mind if it were omitted.

[ The tube retracts back into the GIGAZORD's chest. ]

penetrator retracts penetrator retracts

No sense letting any more Rangers in.

[ Pulling its sword free, the GIGAZORD punches the MEGA KESTRELZORD, causing a flash of sparks.  It then high-kicks the robot in the chest, causing another flash. ]

[ The MEGA KESTRELZORD staggers back but assumes a ready stance. ]

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME turns away from the controls and approaches the three captive RANGERS.  He kicks the BATTLE ENFORCER away from YELLOW, toward the entranceway. ]

MAINFRAME:
Sorry, Rangers.  You miscalculated.

[ MAINFRAME ponders. ]

MAINFRAME (cont'd):
I think probably your biggest mistake was thinking you had any chance against a technopath inside a giant machine.

Yeah, that is a pretty big oversight.

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Yeah, well, you made a mistake too, Mainframe.

[ MAINFRAME retorts amusedly. ]

MAINFRAME:
And what's that?

[ DILLIK's voice comes from behind him. ]

DILLIK (off-screen):
Taking on all of us.

This probably wasn't part of the Rangers' plan ahead of time, but Pete's remark was surely made while he saw Dillik teleport in and pick up the blaster.

[ MAINFRAME spins to find DILLIK at the entranceway aiming the BATTLE ENFORCER at him.  DILLIK pulls the trigger, blasting MAINFRAME with a potent yellow beam.  MAINFRAME erupts in sparks and staggers aside. ]

[ DILLIK moves in front of the RANGERS, such that the cockpit's front glass is behind MAINFRAME.  He then fires again twice more, each blast knocking MAINFRAME back with a heavy burst of sparks.  DILLIK fires yet again, the final blast sending MAINFRAME flying back and shattering through the glass. ]

Good luck staging this one, if the series were produced.

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - Smoking, MAINFRAME falls and lands on the street below. ]

This is still Mainframe.

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - The three RANGERS break away from their restraints.  DILLIK hands the BATTLE ENFORCER back to YELLOW RANGER. ]

They sure broke away easily.  Were they feigning helplessness?

[ BLACK moves toward the broken glass. ]

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
Nice job, Dillik.  Can you watch the Gigazord?

[ DILLIK nods. ]

DILLIK:
You bet.

[ The RANGERS climb onto the console and jump out the hole in the glass. ]

Or perhaps they simply could have leaped through from where they stood.

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - As MAINFRAME stands up from the asphalt (not smoking, and with no sign of weakness), the five RANGERS land around him, each holding a BATTLE ENFORCER with a BATTLIZER brace on his or her wrist. ]

This is now the fake Mainframe; apparently Dr. Bering and Lisa didn't notice the swap-out on their way down (having teleported?).

CHRIS (Black Ranger):
It's over, Mainframe.

[ MAINFRAME's image fades away like a hologram, revealing a NOBOT. ]

[ The RANGERS are startled. ]

DR. BERING (Red Ranger):
What??

[ The NOBOT explodes, knocking the RANGERS back in various directions.  They soon recover. ]

Those pesky exploding Nobots.  I can only guess what sorts of chaos they'd cause as the primary foot soldiers in a sequel series.  Here's hoping they wouldn't be too reminiscent of suicide bombers (or maybe they are already).

[ Sentai (Jetman #41) - The MEGA KESTRELZORD towers overhead. ]

Mega Kestrelzord

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME approaches the Megazord's controls.  He is still smoking slightly.  (The cockpit's glass remains cracked.) ]

The Megazord cockpit's glass was cracked by the Gigazord's close-range steam attack.

MAINFRAME:
Come on, Rangers, don't you know a Nobot when you see one?  (looks around)  By the way, were you done with this?

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - The RANGERS look on. ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
Oh man, not again!

Mainframe hijacked the abandoned Kestrelzord in episode 29.  Having him hijack the Mega Kestrelzord wasn't something I had planned until I began writing the finale.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #44) - The GIGAZORD's eyes open. ]

Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up

[ The GIGAZORD flexes, and we see its hands unclenching in the reflection of a nearby building (a Japanese sign is replaced with a nondescript US billboard or is airbrushed out entirely). ]

Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up

[ The GIGAZORD roars, and a small plume of steam vents from its neck. ]

Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up Gigazord powers up

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - DILLIK mans the controls.  The glass remains broken. ]

DILLIK:
Gigazord, power up!

I find this an interesting inversion of the status quo: now the protagonist is in control of the Gigazord, while the Mega Kestrelzord is under villainous control.  This situation did not arise in Jetman.

It's nice to see Dillik at the controls of the Zord he designed.  I hadn't planned this until I began writing the finale.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - Its sword in hand, the GIGAZORD charges. ]

Gigazord plods forward Gigazord plods forward Gigazord plods forward Gigazord plods forward Gigazord plods forward

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME chuckles and sits in the center seat.  He places his hands on the control panel. ]

MAINFRAME:
(chuckles)  This could be entertaining.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - As the MEGA KESTRELZORD charges, the GIGAZORD strikes it in passing with its sword.  The GIGAZORD then spins with a second slash. ]

round two round two round two round two round two round two round two round two

Hey, way to go, Dillik.

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - The RANGERS watch anxiously. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - The GIGAZORD spins the MEGA KESTRELZORD over its head and then throws it.  The MEGA KESTRELZORD crashes to the ground nearby. ]

throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord throwing the Mega Kestrelzord

It's nice to see the Gigazord isn't suddenly a weakling just because it's controlled by a protagonist, I thought.  Of course, this is surely because Veronica was never controlled by a protagonist in the sentai.

[ INT. MEGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME is shaken, but he coolly recovers. ]

MAINFRAME:
(shaken) Not bad.  Battlezord!

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - As the MEGA KESTRELZORD rises, the BATTLEZORD springs out in front of it and begins shadow-boxing. ]

Battlezord ready Battlezord ready Battlezord ready Battlezord ready

[ INT. GIGAZORD COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME stares down the Gigazord (off-screen). ]

MAINFRAME:
You can probably block the Quad Cannon blast, so let's try something new.  Battlezord, jump!

The Gigazord's shield blocked the Mega Kestrelzord's Gemini Beam, so it stands to reason that the Quad Cannon's blast would be equally useless (given that the Mega Kestrelzord is more powerful than the Battlezord).  Really, I just wanted to rule out the Quad Cannon to explain why it wasn't used in this battle (Jetman had been neglecting it for a while).

[ EXT. ANYWHERE (Jetman #45) - The MEGA KESTRELZORD charges and fires its chest beam. ]

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - The BATTLEZORD dives head-first through the air and is swept up by the passing flood of red energy. ]

Battlezord launch Battlezord launch Battlezord launch Battlezord launch Battlezord launch Battlezord launch

In the sentai, this was a clever new move that suddenly turned the tide for the Rangers.  Here, it's still fairly clever, but it takes on a particularly grim context given that it's now Mainframe doing it.

[ We rapidly advance on the GIGAZORD. ]

approaching the Gigazord approaching the Gigazord approaching the Gigazord

[ The red beam strikes the GIGAZORD's stomach with a spark explosion, and an additional red surge floods through the GIGAZORD and bursts out the other side.  The GIGAZORD crackles with yellow electrical bolts. ]

[ The BATTLEZORD materializes on the other side from blue streaks of light.  It turns and presents its fist victoriously. ]

Battlezord intact Battlezord intact Battlezord intact Battlezord intact Battlezord intact

The Battlezord's triumphant pose would have been appropriate in the sentai; here, it's celebrating its victory over its assigned opponent, but it doesn't have the mental capacity or moral judgment to realize this is a bad turn of events.

[ The GIGAZORD turns to face the BATTLEZORD, erupting in spark explosions as it does so.  The MEGA KESTRELZORD stands in the background. ]

Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - The RANGERS cry out from below: ]

LISA (Blue Ranger):
Dillik!!

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - The still-sparking GIGAZORD drops to its knees.  It then collapses and explodes. ]

Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction Gigazord's destruction

So much for the Gigazord.  But what of the mysterious war Zord seen in Liveman...?

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - The RANGERS are hurled back by a wave of fire and metallic debris.  A larger, even-shaped hunk of metal even squashes a parked car a short distance behind them. ]

The large, even hunk is Dillik's escape pod.

[ EXT. CITY (Jetman #45) - The MEGA KESTRELZORD flies up into the air (footage reversed from sentai).  It then gleams with bluish-white light (US effect). ]

Mega Kestrelzord flies away Mega Kestrelzord flies away

In this sentai footage, the Mega Kestrelzord was actually descending from the sky for the third Veronica battle, but I thought its reversed form would serve as a tolerable transition to the Mega Cruiser, below.

[ INT. CRUISER COCKPIT (US footage) - MAINFRAME leans over and waves to those below.  The front of the cockpit now sports its black overhang.  The front glass retains its crack. ]

MAINFRAME:
So long, Rangers!  Thanks for the Zords!

I considered making this line closer to the title of the Douglas Adams novel So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, but "thanks for all the Zords" seemed like an awkward phrasing.

[ EXT. ANYWHERE (Jetman #32) - In its customary grid, the KESTREL MEGA CRUISER retracts its wings and shimmers with multicolored energy. ]

Kestrel Mega Cruiser Kestrel Mega Cruiser Kestrel Mega Cruiser Kestrel Mega Cruiser

The Kestrel Mega Cruiser appeared only in Jetman #32 and 34, but I found its footage extremely useful in episode 40 as Mainframe was on the loose in the hijacked Zords (footage of the Mega Cruiser in the sky was much more flexible than Megazord footage).  I didn't plan this turn of events until I actually wrote the finale, though.

[ EXT. SKY (US footage) - Gleaming with greenish-yellow energy, the KESTREL MEGA CRUISER streaks into the distance at high speed with a bright blue contrail (compare with Jetman #32).  Almost immediately, it is gone.  A loud sonic boom follows. ]

The Mega Cruiser's flight in the form of a streak was also quite useful in terms of US footage, as it didn't require a detailed reproduction of the Mega Cruiser.

[ EXT. CITY STREET (US footage) - As the smoke and debris settles, the RANGERS pick themselves up and regroup.  They appear stunned.  (They retain their BATTLIZER braces and BATTLE ENFORCERS.) ]

PETE (Yellow Ranger):
I can't believe it...

[ The nearby hunk of metal splits open, revealing itself to be a constructed entity of some sort.  From within emerges DILLIK, unharmed although slightly disoriented. ]

DILLIK:
Wow, that was some landing.  I'm glad I built that escape pod, though.  (looks around)  Hey, where'd the Mega Kestrelzord go?

Having Dillik survive in an escape pod didn't seem too ridiculously contrived.

[ The RANGERS have no answer.  "To be continued..."  Fade to black. ]
